‘You can’t do that’ Chelsea manager Graham Potter slammed for comments about Arsenal
Graham Potter has been criticized for his remarks about Arsenal after Sunday’s match at Stamford Bridge.
Potter was effusive in his praise for the Gunners following their 1-0 victory, but Ray Parlour claims that he focused too much on the wrong team.
Gabriel’s goal in the second half gave Arsenal the three points they needed to regain the Premier League lead. Despite the narrow margin, Mikel Arteta’s team thoroughly merited victory.
It was Potter’s first home loss as Chelsea manager, but his second consecutive loss in the Premier League. In his post-match press conference, the former Brighton manager lavished praise upon Arsenal.
However, Gunners legend Parlour did not believe that was the appropriate response and believes the 47-year-old should have focused more on his own team.
After listening to the interview, Parlour told talkSPORT: “I listened to the interview after, all he did was talk about Arsenal and how good they are. You can’t do that, you’re at Chelsea.
“This is Arsenal vs Chelsea. Chelsea have won multiple trophies over the years, the standards are so high.
“That’s the problem you’ve got. You can’t be coming out and praising the other team. They didn’t lay a glove on Arsenal.
“How many times did Arsenal nick the ball back when [Chelsea] players were looking up, and there’s no movement, there’s no-one running in behind? They can nick the ball back and then suddenly you’re back at Chelsea’s back four again.”
After the game, Potter heaped praise upon Arsenal. He claimed that it demonstrated the wide chasm between the two sides.
Potter said: “We played against a team in a really good moment and a confident team, so credit to them. We have to look at where the two teams are at.
“Arsenal are in a good moment and have worked together for a long time. We’re in a different phase.
“We lacked quality but the effort was there and we were beaten by the better team today. We huffed and puffed but you could see the difference between the two teams in terms of confidence, structure and work together.
“We’re not in a fantastic moment as we speak and in the end Arsenal deserved to win because they were the better team overall. We have to take that and use it as motivation to improve. Arsenal defend well, they press well and make it difficult for you to create chances.”
