Wright disagrees with Carragher on Arsenal and Liverpool clash prediction
Former Arsenal star Ian Wright objected with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher’s predictions for this weekend’s match between the two teams. Anfield is a difficult place for the Gunners to travel, so this match should be one of the most important in their pursuit of the Premier League championship.
This is despite the Reds having a far from ideal season, as they are currently in the middle of the table and have suffered a 4-1 loss to Manchester City and a poor performance in a 0-0 draw at Chelsea. Away from home, Jurgen Klopp’s side has struggled, but in front of their own fans, they are a different animal, ranking third in the form table.
Carragher believes Liverpool could be instrumental in handing Arsenal a setback in the title chase. He stated on Sky Sports, “I think Liverpool beat Arsenal at home,” shortly after writing in the Telegraph that the Merseyside club will have a say at the top.
“For all Liverpool’s difficulties this season, aside from when City and Arsenal play each other, they are the greatest challenge remaining in the league… Whichever side beats Liverpool will feel like they are a step closer to winning the league. If City succeed and Arsenal do not, the treble talk will get louder.”
Former Arsenal forward Wright disagrees, believing that the Gunners will defeat Liverpool and move closer to the championship. He stated the following on the Wrighty’s House podcast: “Liverpool’s performance away to Man City was disappointing because it felt like an old champion going back into the ring.
“For a couple of rounds, it looked like they were back but then they were gone after the first punch. Man City just steamrolled them and it was quite embarrassing for Liverpool in the end. I think Arsenal have the energy and the capabilities to cause Liverpool problems. It’s a question of how long we can sustain it at Anfield because that’s not something we’ve done for a while there.
“Can we sustain the pressure you need so Liverpool don’t go bang, bang, bang? That’s what I’m excited to see. If we can beat them – which I think we can – then I’m starting to get very excited. I’m excited as it is but these are the huge games in a title race.
“I think Arsenal can do it, I’m confident Arsenal can do it. It’s so exciting. I can already feel the buzz around that game. With what’s going on at Liverpool, it’s the time to attack them and get them to answer some questions. I know we’re going to have a period in that game where if Liverpool are not at it, we’re probably going to score a couple of goals.
“That’s what I’m excited about. I like our mentality and we’ve got to go there and do what we’ve been doing over the past month or so.”
