Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised midfield general Ilkay Gundogan during his post-match press conference following the victory over Burnley.

Gundogan was signed for £21 million from Borussia Dortmund (Sky Sports) and was the Spanish manager’s first signing at the Etihad.

Since then, the seasoned German has made an incredible 244 appearances for the Citizens, scoring 43 goals and giving 33 assists.

As a result, it’s not surprising that Guardiola holds the midfielder in such high regard after he became the highest-scoring German in Premier League history on Saturday.

Gundogan scored City’s second goal of the afternoon, surpassing Mesut Ozil’s previous tally of 33 Premier League goals.

Guardiola praised the 31-year-old’s performance  after the easy 2-0 victory at Turf Moor.

As quoted by City Xtra on Twitter, the Spanish boss stated: “Wow! He’s an exceptional human being first. So intelligent, you can talk with him about everything, and it’s nice to have players like him. I’m so glad, happy he could make this record.”

Receiving such high praise from any manager, let alone Guardiola, has to be music to any player’s ears.

In actuality, aside from the goal, this was another top-tier effort from Gundogan (Transfermarkt), who completed 5/5 long balls, 50/55 passes, and made one good tackle in a vital win for the Sky Blues (Sofascore).

This latest goal brought the German’s season total to eight goals and six assists from 34 games across all competitions, as the erstwhile defensive midfielder continues to defy conventional wisdom with his goalscoring prowess in previous seasons.
