Wout Weghorst responds to critics after being dubbed ‘worst Man Utd player ever’
Wout Weghorst has justified his performance for Manchester United, stating that he is effectively fulfilling his responsibilities for the team and has gained the confidence of Erik ten Hag.
Since his loan move to Manchester United in January, Wout Weghorst, the Dutch forward, has scored only two goals in 18 appearances.
His lacklustre performance has attracted severe criticism from various pundits, including Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, who believes that Weghorst does not possess the required level of skill to play for the club.
Another former United player, Peter Schmeichel, shares this view and has labelled Weghorst as the “odd one out” in Erik ten Hag’s squad.
Since he joined Manchester United on loan in January, the striker from the Netherlands has scored two goals in 18 matches for the Red Devils.
Although some pundits and fans have criticized Weghorst’s performance, Ten Hag, the coach of Manchester United, has maintained his support for the Dutch striker, stating that he contributes more to the team than just scoring goals.
Assessing his stint at Manchester United, Weghorst said during the international break: “I’ve played a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me. It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team.
“That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies.
“We have one now. We have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League.
“So it just shows me that I am being part of it. And being part of us being successful and that appreciation, that’s a good thing.”
