Worrying Chelsea statistics reveal what Tuchel must fix to beat Manchester City and Liverpool to the title
Chelsea are struggling to create chances in front of goal in the Premier League, which could lead to their demise as champions.
Although it may seem unfair to criticize Thomas Tuchel’s team when they are producing results, it is clear that they haven’t been as ruthless in attack as their main rivals have been in recent weeks.
The Blues defeated Brentford 1-0 at the weekend, with Ben Chilwell scoring the game’s only goal, but they were largely reliant on Edouard Mendy’s heroics to get them over the line.
Of course, they still won the game, and not every victory has to be convincing, nor should it be expected over the course of a long season.
However, evidence suggests that Chelsea aren’t creating enough chances per 90 minutes, which could come back to bite them in the future.
According to the CIES Football Observatory, Chelsea creates 7.4 ‘big chances’ per game on average, which is less than Liverpool (10.1), Manchester United (8.6), and Manchester City (8.6). (8.4).
A ‘big chance’ defines a clear-cut chance to score a goal.
While Tuchel has become known for establishing a strong defensive foundation, his team has also conceded the third most chances of those four teams, with an average of 5.3 per game.
Meanwhile, City, along with Rafa Benitez’s Everton, have conceded the fewest chances in the league on average (2.6).
The Blues have had injury issues at the back, but there’s less cause for concern there, especially given that Chelsea has kept 25 clean sheets in the 42 games Tuchel has coached.
However, the figures for the future are slightly more concerning, and if the west London club is to maintain their title bid, they will need to improve in that area.
To back up that claim, Chelsea has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season. 15 of them have been scored or created by a centre-back or wing-back. While that is impressive, it is also concerning, and their forwards will need to contribute more as time goes on.
