Woeful: What Man Utd man did in Italy vs England was so bad it’s gone viral

England began their qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 with a fantastic start on Thursday evening, as they played against Italy, the current European champions, in Naples. 

It’s worth noting that Italy had defeated England in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium. 

However, this time, it was England who emerged victorious with a score of 2-1 at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium, thanks to goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane in the first half. 

Harry Kane is now the record scorer for England.

Southgate may have some worries about the fact that his team had many opportunities to score in the first half of the game and secure a larger lead, but were unable to do so.

Just before the halftime break, Jack Grealish missed a very easy opportunity to score a third goal for England. After the break, Italy mounted a comeback and scored a goal in the 56th minute through debutant Mateo Retegui. 

Although the goal was well-finished by Retegui, it was due to some terrible defending from Manchester United  defender Harry Maguire. 

Maguire, who is usually dependable when playing for England, made a poor pass and then gave Italy the chance to break forward by leaving space.

Maguire’s decision to try and regain possession allowed Italy to take advantage of the situation, which Nicolo Barella and Retegui capitalized on by scoring the goal.

Maguire’s performance against Italy was definitely not his best and this might be concerning for Southgate. 

Maguire has been a consistent figure in the England team, despite criticism from fans. Southgate’s loyalty to Maguire has paid off in the past, with Maguire being named in the Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament and performing well at the 2022 World Cup.

 However, if Maguire is unable to improve his form and prevent his domestic struggles from affecting his international performance, the pressure on Southgate to drop him may become too great. England’s next match is a Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley.
