“With my mask”: Son Heung-min delivers verdict on when he will return to action for Spurs

“With my mask”: Son Heung-min delivers verdict on when he will return to action for Spurs

Son Heung-min was eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup when South Korea was defeated 4-1 by Brazil in the round of 16.

Son suffered a facial injury during Spurs’ sixth-day UEFA Champions League match against Olympique de Marseille. After a heinous challenge by Chancel Mbemba, he was substituted in the first half.

Spurs needed a point to advance, but they won the game 2-1 to advance to the round of 16. Son’s fractured left eye socket caused concern among Tottenham and South Korean fans.

Nonetheless, he played in the opening group stage match against Uruguay, which ended 0-0, while wearing a black mask to prevent further harm to his face. He remained ready to play for them until the match in the round of 16.

In fact, Son’s assist helped South Korea defeat Portugal 2-1 in extra time and advance to the round of 16. Now, when asked when he will be able to return to play for Spurs, he told the South Korean publication JoongAng Daily (via the Express):

“The Premier League is on a break, so I think I should return as soon as possible and will need to play with my mask on. I was born to play football and I am a professional footballer so it’s only right to continue to play even with my mask on.”

“Although I wish I could recover quickly and play without the mask. I will have to discuss those matters with my doctor.”

On the 26th of December, Spurs continue Premier League competition against Brentford. Son should be available for the game, barring any late complications.
