Why does Pep Guardiola have ‘mdcr’ on his shirt on the touchline during Manchester City matches?
The 51-year-old Spaniard, who is chasing his fourth Premier League title with Manchester City, is frequently spotted on the touchline wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt.
When he’s not yelling orders at his players, he’s often storming about the technical area, scratching his head for his next brilliant tactical idea.
It’s a long way from the days of managers like Sir Alex Ferguson and George Graham wearing a suit and tie.
The collection is part of a Puma-designed Manchester City uniform collection.
Guardiola has previously displayed the names of his favorite charities on his touchline clothing.
During the 2020-21 season, he wore a hoodie with the charity Open Arms’ slogan on it.
What does ‘mdcr’ stand for?
The four-letter abbreviation stands for ‘Madchester,’ and it adds to the city’s reputation as a musical and cultural cauldron where crazy things happen.
The phrase is related with the 1980s and 1990s music scene.
Back then, bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Inspiral Carpets ruled the roost in terms of music.
Then along came Oasis, led by City-loving brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, who forever changed the face of British music.
But Madchester was also connected with the city’s large raves and performances at the time, many of which took place in warehouses and derelict buildings that had been transformed into music venues.
