Following their victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
After a scoreless first half, City turned on the charm in the second half to clinch a spot in the tournament. In the 53rd minute, Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring with a brilliant free kick.
Five minutes later, Julian Alvarez was there to tap in a second goal as the team’s advancement was secured.
City was indebted to goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who denied Christian Pulisic, Lewis Hall, and Raheem Sterling with a series of stellar saves.
The Blues’ victory on Wednesday night qualified them for the competition’s round of 16 ahead of the winter World Cup break, which begins after this weekend’s Premier League matchday.
The draw for the next round will take place immediately following Manchester United’s match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
