Who Chelsea could play in Champions League quarter-finals following Haaland record and Porto defeat

Chelsea has progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the third consecutive time, having overturned a one-goal deficit in the first leg to eliminate Borussia Dortmund from the tournament.

The crucial victory was secured by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, in what was considered as Graham Potter’s most significant game as Chelsea’s manager.

The attention now shifts to the potential opponents that Chelsea could face in the quarter-finals, as their European expedition continues this season.

The last-eight stage of the competition is when things become truly fascinating, with numerous heavyweight clubs from across Europe battling it out in a spectacular fashion.

Last season, Thomas Tuchel’s team reached this same stage of the competition, only to be defeated 5-4 after extra time by eventual champions Real Madrid.

The prospect of repeating their successful 2020/21 campaign, in which they defeated Manchester City to become champions, is now beginning to generate excitement in west London.

Chelsea was part of the first batch of round-of-16 fixtures, which meant they were among the first two teams to progress to the next stage. The other team to progress alongside them was Benfica, who won 7-1 on aggregate after defeating Club Brugge.

The following day, the next two fixtures took place. Bayern Munich and AC Milan managed to maintain their first-leg advantages against PSG and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively. On Tuesday evening, Manchester City secured a dominant 7-0 victory over RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland breaking several records by scoring five goals.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan secured a place in the next round by keeping a clean sheet against FC Porto.

There are still two fixtures left to determine the final two teams that will make up the last eight. Liverpool will be travelling to Madrid on Wednesday, while Napoli will be taking on last season’s Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt.

Once these fixtures have been played, the draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday, March 17. The following teams are potential opponents for Chelsea in the quarter-finals, with the score in brackets representing the outcome from the first leg:

  • Benfica
  • Bayern Munich
  • AC Milan
  • Inter Milan
  • Manchester City
  • Napoli/Eintracht Frankfurt (2-0)
  • Real Madrid/Liverpool (5-2)

In this stage of the tournament, there are no longer any seeded teams, and clubs from the same country can be drawn against each other.

Furthermore, teams that competed in the same group during the group stage can now face each other, which was not allowed in the round-of-16.
