What Sir Alex Ferguson told Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp after presenting him Manager of the Year award
Jurgen Klopp was named LMA Manager of the Year on Tuesday evening, following another outstanding season in command of the Reds.
Despite missing out on the Premier League title by one point to Manchester City, the Reds reach 90 points for the third time under the German’s leadership and produce a sensational second-half surge to reduce the distance on the Sky Blues.
This is Klopp’s second time winning this accolade, which is voted on by fellow professional managers and can be given to any coach in England’s top four categories.
The Liverpool manager was also recognised for his work during the 2019/20 season, which ended Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title.
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was on standby to present Klopp with the LMA manager’s award, having seen his old adversaries go from strength to strength since the arrival of the ex-Borussia Dortmund coach.
Ferguson, clearly moved by the realisation of the force Liverpool has become as a result of the 54-year-old, exclaimed as he handed him the trophy, “This is agony, absolute agony!”
Ferguson recommended Klopp to ‘move to a club with history’ when they first met 12 years ago, a statement he now regrets. “I should have told him to go to Scunthorpe United,” joked the Scot.
Responding to this remark, the Liverpool manager added: “I couldn’t understand anything he [Ferguson] said… I’ve improved through working with Robbo and Kenny.”
On Monday evening, Klopp was also crowned Premier League Manager of the Season, defeating Eddie Howe, Patrick Vieira, Pep Guardiola, and Thomas Frank.
