Mikel Arteta and Martin Odegaard paid their respects to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster prior to the Gunners’ pivotal Premier League match against Liverpool.

Almost 34 years after the tragedy, the pair were photographed placing floral wreaths at the memorial plaque located outside of Anfield prior to the match against Liverpool.

The tragedy, which claimed a total of 97 lives, occurred at Sheffield Wednesday’s home stadium on April 15, 1989, during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Arteta and Odegaard were photographed at Anfield on Saturday, having traveled from London for the match, with many praising the Gunners for their gracious gesture.

Arsenal’s official Twitter account wrote: ”Our thoughts are with our friends at Liverpool FC and all the families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster – April 15, 1989.”

On Sunday, a minute of silence will be observed prior to kickoff, and a mosaic featuring the Eternal Flames and the number 97 will be displayed on the Kop.

In what is expected to be a contentious matchup between two of the Premier League’s hottest teams on Merseyside, Arsenal knows that a win will put them eight points ahead of second-place Manchester City with just eight games remaining in the season.
