What Erik ten Hag told Manchester United players at half-time of Real Betis victory

Erik ten Hag encouraged his Manchester United team to have more possession of the ball in the second period of their Europa League triumph over Real Betis.

United secured a 1-0 victory in Spain on Thursday evening, after defeating Betis 4-1 at Old Trafford the previous week, and advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Despite being clear favorites to progress to the next stage, Ten Hag’s team had some anxious moments in the early part of the second leg.

Manchester United was lucky to escape consequences for their substandard defending in the first half of the game.

However, they made a comeback with a significantly improved performance in the second half, which culminated in a fantastic goal by Marcus Rashford, securing their victory. T

Ten Hag spoke about the adjustments he made during halftime after the match.

“I think we could have gone into the lead, but there were some moments in defence and defensive transition where they could break, we had to avoid that,” he told BT Sport.

“To keep more control on the ball, to use the overload in the midfield, we didn’t always do it. The second half was much better. You see also the energy is out of the opponent and especially after you get the first goal.

“I think second-half we were much better on the ball, much more calm, keep the ball in the opponents half, let them run, and then you see, you create chances.”
