Manchester United has confirmed that former interim manager Ralf Rangnick will not be remaining on as a consultant.

The German, who is due to take sole charge of the Austrian national team, was chosen as United’s interim manager in November, with the intention of becoming a football consultant at the end of his stint in charge of the first squad.

He initially accepted the post on the condition that he be given a future at Old Trafford beyond the end of current season.

Rangnick has extensive experience in non-football concerns, having overseen tremendous progress within the Red Bull franchise at both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.

It was anticipated he would bring that amount of experience and knowledge to Old Trafford ahead of the start of a new era under a new manager this summer.

United, of course, appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager last month, and the former Ajax boss was introduced to the media for the first time at an Old Trafford press conference last Monday.

Unsurprisingly, the Dutchman was questioned about Rangnick’s presence at the club after his arrival, and he didn’t appear too happy on relying on his backing and counsel.

When asked if he thought the German’s job as a consultant would be useful, Ten Hag replied: “That is on the club.”

It was a brief response that didn’t give much hope that Ten Hag would rely on Rangnick’s knowledge and support.

“It’s part of my analysis, I analyse by myself, I observe and I speak with a lot of people, but I will draw my own line,” said Ten Hag. “I’m still in the process of analysing to set conclusions, I’m looking forward to working with these players.

“The season before, this squad finished second in the league, so it has potential, so I think if we improve, if we can work with them, we can get more out of them than this season.”
