‘What did he do’: Harry Redknapp slams star set to leave Arsenal, shocked at his wage
As Harry Redknapp told talkSPORT, he was surprised that Alexandre Lacazette earned ‘£200k-a-week’ at Arsenal and wondered, ‘what did he do?’
The 31-year-old will quit Arsenal when his contract expires at the end of June and rejoin Lyon — he moved from the French club to England’s capital in 2017
During his tenure in north London, Lacazette struggled to help the Gunners return to the Champions League, with Tottenham finishing fourth on the final day of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
Lacazette’s time at Arsenal ended bitterly because of how the squad performed in the closing weeks, but he goes as a beloved character among supporters and youngsters in the dressing room.
However, when Redknapp was informed of Lacazette’s earnings at Arsenal, the former Tottenham manager was taken aback.
“They (Arsenal) are still short,” said Redknapp. “I could only ever see Tottenham finishing above Arsenal. Spurs were miles better.
“I heard you saying earlier that Lacazette was on £200k-a-week. No wonder they let him go. Now he’s gone. What did he do for his 200k?
On Aubameyang: “You needed to get him playing, didn’t you!? They don’t have that many good players. Get him on side. Sometimes you have to swallow it and get them playing for you.”
Arsenal aren’t exactly efficient or savvy when it comes to closing transfer deals, as evidenced by their striker search.
When Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left in January, they needed a number nine, but with pre-season approaching, they don’t appear to be close to bringing in that new face.
Because he will be joining the Premier League’s youngest side, a proven player and a striker with the ability to knit everything together are required.
Given the departure of Lacazette, the average age for next season is likely to fall.
