What Casemiro has said about Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea as Manchester United nears a £60 million transfer

Casemiro has described Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel as a “tough” team to play against as the Brazilian nears a big-money move to Manchester United.

The 30-year- old’s was not even mentioned in this summer’s transfer window a week ago, but after Brentford’s humiliation in the Premier League, the Glazers and the board that represents them have stepped up their transfer game to assist Erik ten Hag.

Initially, Frenkie de Jong was ten Hag’s top target, but the ongoing contract dispute means that the Red Devils can no longer sit back and hope that things work out in their favor.

Then it was Adrien Rabiot’s turn, and after a week and a half of negotiating, John Murtough determined that his wage expectations were too high.

As a result, Casemiro was the next player on the agenda, and despite initial concerns that the Real Madrid icon would prefer to stay put, big wages and the chance to gain regular first-team football ahead of Qatar 2022 piqued the interest of a player who had lost his first-team spot in the early stages of 2022/23 to the more youthful pair of Edouardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.

According to the Manchester Evening News, personal terms have now been agreed upon in addition to the £60 million fee.

The midfielder will have his medical soon and will sign a four-year contract.

Chelsea were rumoured to be interested in the deal, but it is understood that new owner Todd Boehly prefers to play the long game with De Jong.

With this in mind, what does Manchester United’s newest signing think of Chelsea and Tuchel?

Over the last few seasons, Real Madrid and Chelsea have met four times in the final stages of the Champions League.

In 2020/21, the Blues easily defeated Los Blancos in the semi-finals en route to their second big-eared trophy in Porto.

Casemiro, on the other hand, recently starred in the La Liga Champions’ quarter-final win over the reigning European and World Champions over two legs.

The midfielder was not fooled by Tuchel’s suggestion that it was all over after the first leg at Stamford Bridge, which Real Madrid won 3-1.

“We won’t fall for that,” he said back at the time. “We played probably what was the best 90 minutes of our season in London last week and took a major step closer to qualifying for the semi-final but we can’t get overly confident.

“We all heard what Thomas Tuchel said. We don’t buy it. We know that it will be a tough game. They are defending champions and we won’t take this game lightly, I can assure you of that.”

And he was correct, as the west Londoners almost completed an incredible comeback in their 3-2 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
