‘We need him next game’ – Pep Guardiola clarifies Man City substitution at half-time

‘We need him next game’ – Pep Guardiola clarifies Man City substitution at half-time

A significantly altered Manchester City defeated Sevilla 3-1 in their final Champions League group game, but Pep Guardiola raised eyebrows by hooking Jack Grealish at halftime.

The 27-year-old didn’t have the worst 45-minute performance, creating two chances, shooting once, and whipping in two crosses while running at his opposite marker, but his substitution appeared to be a message from Guardiola that he needed to improve.

Pep, on the other hand, has explained why he made the change at halftime, claiming it was to protect Grealish ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Fulham.

As per the Manchester Evening News, he told to reporters: “Jack was the best player in the first half, more direct. But he played a really tough game in the last game. We need him for the next game…”

Guardiola is concerned about tiredness since Grealish, who has made 14 appearances across all competitions this season, participated in seven games for City last month and played the whole 90 minutes against Leicester on Saturday.

Given that City had already advanced to the knockout stages and finished first in their group, Saturday’s match against Fulham is more crucial than Wednesday’s victory over Sevilla.

It makes more sense to rest important players with that game in mind since a win over the weekend would put Guardiola’s team atop the Premier League standings.

Grealish has only scored one goal so far this season and hasn’t received an assist.

The England international, however, will find solace in his performance and hopes to break his dry streak on Saturday. He still seems to have Guardiola’s support.
