Wayne Rooney sends warning to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Cristiano Ronaldo signing
Wayne Rooney has warned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he cannot bear to lead over another trophyless season after confirming the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 36-year-old is on the brink of completing a dramatic return to Old Trafford after United struck a deal with Juventus on Friday, after learning that the club legend was on the verge of joining rivals Manchester City.
Ronaldo underwent a medical in Lisbon over the weekend and is expected to be in ground to make his second debut, after a 12-year absence, against Newcastle after the international break.
Solskjaer has overseen a steady improvement since replacing Jose Mourinho but after enjoying a sensational window, which also saw United add Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to an already star-studded squad, his former teammate Rooney fears he has no place to hide any longer.
“Cristiano is still one of the best players in the world and has won titles everywhere he’s been so he’s going to be huge,” he said.

“He still wants to be the best and I’m sure he will have a big impact on them this season.
“Ole will certainly know that he’s in a position now where he needs to start winning these big titles with the players that he’s brought in.
“For their development, to get to the next step now is to start winning titles.”
Rooney has maintained that he never expected Ronaldo to join United’s bitter rivals even though they seemed to be in pole position before United mobilised.
“I just felt it didn’t seem right, it didn’t feel like it was ever going to happen,” said Rooney.
“His agent [Jorge Mendes] did his job because I knew that the minute there was any hope of him going for Man City, United would never let it happen.”
