Chelsea were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage last season by Real Madrid. They lost the first leg 3-1 at home at Stamford Bridge, but put up a brave fight in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
During that match, which was managed by Thomas Tuchel at the time, Chelsea took a commanding 3-0 lead to put them ahead in the tie. However, Real Madrid managed to stage a comeback with goals from Rodrygo and Karim Benzema. The latter’s goal was scored in extra-time and it resulted in Chelsea’s elimination from the competition, as Real Madrid won the tie 5-4 on aggregate.
Graham Potter, the manager of Chelsea, is looking forward to the challenge of playing against the current champions Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and if they progress, they will face either Manchester City or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.
Earlier last week, there was footage of Graham Potter at a fan event where he received cheers from Chelsea supporters. This was because he had declared that the team would do their best to “win the * Champions League.”
“Well, I said we would try to win the Champions League and that’s the same I’m sure for the other seven clubs as well,” he said at his press conference.
“The other clubs will say you can lose in the quarter-final, because that’s the nature of the Champions League.
“We’ll focus on Real Madrid when we get there but at the moment it’s Everton.
“The feeling is excited but as I said, I’d rather speak about Everton because that game is tomorrow and the other stuff is a long way away.”
