‘Utmost respect’: Manchester City players disclose Liverpool man was ‘one of the first to offer title congratulations
Jurgen Klopp, according to Ilkay Gundogan, was “one of the first” to message him after the Premier League ended this weekend. Manchester City won the Premier League title by a single point over Liverpool.
On Sunday, Manchester City came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the Premier League title. It is still awful.
Liverpool, of course, needed to defeat Wolves while City dropped points in order to win the trophy. That appeared very likely when Aston Villa led with barely 15 minutes remaining at the Etihad. All the Reds needed to do to win at Anfield was score a goal.
Of course, they did — in fact, they found two. However, Ilkay Gundogan spurred a rally that saw City score three times in five minutes.
Heartbreak for Liverpool, who went from having little hope to having no hope in the space of 90 minutes. But it’s possible that’s the only way the Premier League title chase could end.
Throughout the season, Liverpool and City pushed each other to their limits. After a second half of the campaign in which both sides looked unstoppable, only one point separated them in the end.
And, despite their grief, it appears the Reds are anything but bitter.
According to Ilkay Gundogan, Jurgen Klopp was “one of the first” to congratulate him on Sunday. Of course, they worked together at Borussia Dortmund, and it’s evident they still hold one other in high respect.
“[Klopp] was one of the first [to message],” Gundogan told Sport1 (translated by Sport Witness). “We have always treated each other with the utmost respect.
“He had another very good season with Liverpool and made life extremely difficult for us. He’s just an outstanding guy and manager, and he’s shown that over the years.”
To be sure, you wouldn’t expect anything less from Klopp. He hasn’t displayed much animosity for City over the years, even when it would have been simple. Certainly less than the majority.
However, having the Champions League final on Saturday helps in this sense. Everyone would quickly forget about the weekend’s heartbreak if they win in Paris.
