Uruguayan star ‘faces a 15-match suspension’ for elbowing FIFA official and attacking World Cup referee

After seeming to elbow a FIFA official in the wake of Uruguay’s contentious elimination from the World Cup, Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez could face a stunning 15-game suspension.

Many predicted that the South American team would go to the knockout stages of the competition, but Diego Alonso’s squad struggled in Qatar, scoring only twice in three matches.

After earning a single point in their first two group games, Uruguay knew they needed to defeat Ghana to advance from Group H. However, they did not anticipate South Korea’s victory over Portugal, which led to Uruguay’s early exit.

Giorgian De Arrascaeta scored twice to lead Uruguay to a 2-0 victory over Ghana, but the match was overshadowed by officiating controversies and harsh scenes as news of the South Korea result began to come in.

Several Uruguayan stars, notably Gimenez, were furious after referee Daniel Siebert did not award them a late penalty after Edinson Cavani was fouled inside the penalty area.

And after realizing they were eliminated from the tournament due to goal differential, Gimenez and his colleagues screamed their anger at the referee as he exited the field. Gimenez may find himself in deep water when he elbowed a FIFA official in the back of the head during his attempts to approach Siebert personally.

The enraged Atletico Madrid player had to be restrained by his own teammates, and according to a fresh report from  Mundo Deportivo, the 27-year-old might face a lengthy ban if FIFA is informed of his post-match outburst.

After the recent controversy, Gimenez also released an X-rated tirade against a nearby television camera. “They [the referees] are all a bunch of thieves these sons of b***hes,” he fumed. “Yes, record me. Son of a b***h.”

It is still unclear whether any prospective ban for Gimenez would extend to domestic play, but if it did, it would be a devastating blow for Atletico Madrid, who are 13 points behind Barcelona in LaLiga.

Gimenez may not be the only Uruguayan star facing FIFA action; Cavani and Luis Suarez also reacted poorly at the conclusion of the match, with Cavani being caught on camera slamming a VAR monitor as he exited the field.

Suarez criticized FIFA and its officials after bursting into tears at the final whistle. He emphasized: “I see a penalty for Cavani because he is cut off by the defender and he puts his body in front of him. Darwin’s is very clear too. They are not excuses, but incredible penalties are being awarded in this World Cup. And there is the committee of referees and FIFA, and they have to try to explain themselves better, at least.”
