UK Government warns Chelsea that they risk dropping out of Premier League if Roman Abramovich does not sell before next season
Chelsea risks sliding out of the Premier League and losing many of its players if Roman Abramovich does not sell the club before the next season, according to government authorities.
The team has been granted a partial exemption from the penalties imposed on its owner following the invasion of Ukraine, although the present license expires at the end of May.
Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries is said to have informed allies that if Mr Abramovich retains control of the club, she will not continue to support it for its own sake.
The existing terms were designed to keep the club running during the current season in order to avoid interrupting the Premier League and other competitions in which Chelsea participates.
According to a government source:
“The clock is ticking. They simply cannot continue operating into the summer under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.”
Any Chelsea takeover would have to be sanctioned by the Treasury and could not directly benefit Mr Abramovich, even if he agreed to give the money away after the deal was done.
A number of potential bidders have claimed to be in discussions with the government, but officials say they will only make a decision on the following steps once a deal structure has been agreed upon.
If the club isn’t sold by the time the summer transfer window starts, it won’t be allowed to sign new players or sell existing ones.
According to a government source, players may attempt to depart by arguing that their contract has been rendered null and void due to the limits imposed on the squad. . “If you’re a player who wants to leave it won’t be hard to find a way in which the current situation is not compliant with your contract,” they said.
Chelsea’s management is attempting to change the conditions of the present license, claiming that it is impeding the team’s ability to compete.
The club claims it is unjust that it cannot sell new tickets and sought this week to play its FA Cup fixture against Middlesbrough behind closed doors, but the proposal was dropped after significant criticism.
However, government officials believe the license will not be dramatically altered.
Chelsea must also deal with the consequences of the EU sanctions placed on Mr. Abramovich this week, which could have an impact on upcoming Champions League matches, beginning with the quarter-final against Real Madrid.
