UEFA confirms Champions League format from 2024 onwards

Following agreements between UEFA and European clubs, the Champions League’s new group stage will contain eight matches rather than the intended ten.

There had been concerns that the new 36-team league system would result in schedule overload, but a compromise was found, and the number of matches in the round-robin phase has been lowered.

It means that, starting in 2024, there will be an additional 64 games, rather than the 100 suggested in the initial changes.

Another important alteration has occurred in the selection of two of the 36 teams for the group stage. It was argued that two clubs may qualify just based on their UEFA club coefficient.

However, this raised concerns about sporting integrity because these teams would not be required to qualify automatically through their domestic league.

Again, a compromise has been reached, with two teams being chosen based on their country’s coefficient over the previous year.

This rating takes into account performance in Europe’s three football competitions: the Champions League, the Europa League, and the Conference League.

If the revised structure had been used for the next season, England and the Netherlands would have received the two extra spots.

The Champions League will be restructured beginning with the 2024/25 season.
