UEFA Champions League pots confirmed as Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs await draw

Manchester City will represent the Premier League in pot 1 in Thursday’s Champions League draw.

Last year’s semi-finalists are still hoping for their first success in Europe’s elite club competition, with a final defeat in 2021 being their best effort.

With the final in Istanbul – the site of Liverpool’s iconic victory 17 years ago – Pep Guardiola’s side will be among the favourites once more.

The Reds, along with Chelsea and Tottenham, are all in pot 2.

Liverpool won the competition for the last time in 2019, while the Blues and Thomas Tuchel were crowned European champions two years later. Tottenham returned to the Champions League after a late surge last season.

Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga champions, are all in pot one, along with AC Milan, Porto, and Ajax. Frankfurt, the Europa League champions, will also be in pot 1.

The three English teams will be joined in pot 2 by three LaLiga teams, including Barcelona, who have been heavily recruited. Other teams in the running include Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, RB Leizpig, and Juventus.

Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan are among the toughest opponents in pot 3, with Premier League clubs eager to avoid the two former champions.

Red Bull Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Shakhtar Donetsk are all possible opponents, as are Napoli, Benfica, and Sporting Lisbon.

Rangers are the sixth British team to qualify, having defeated PSV Eindhoven in the first round.

They’ll be in Pot 4 with Glasgow rivals Celtic and 1993 champions Marseille. Club Brugge, a 1978 finalist, is also among those who could face Premier League opposition.

Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia and FC Copenhagen of Denmark are also in pot 4. Maccabi Haifa returned to the Champions League after a 13-year absence thanks to a last-second goal in their qualifier. Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic completes the 32-team field in this year’s competition.
