Tottenham players forced to remind referee to send off Eintracht Frankfurt defender after he forgets he is on yellow card
Tottenham players had to remind the referee to send off Eintracht Frankfurt defender Tuta during Wednesday night’s 3-2 Champions League victory.
On the hour mark, the Germans were feeling the pace of the game as Spurs, who were already leading 3-1, charged at the visitors’ backline before Tuta brought down Son Heung-min.
And the 23-year-old Brazilian quickly entered Carlos del Cerro Grande’s book.
Tuta cynically took Son down again two minutes later, grabbing his shirt and pulling him to the ground.
The referee marched over and issued the centre-back with a second yellow card… but no red.
Spurs players Rodrigo Bentancur and Emerson Royal were seen arguing with the referee, telling him Tuta had already been booked moments before.
The ref eventually pulled out the red card after a long period of waiting to give the Frankfurt man his marching orders.
One social media user reacted to the incident by saying: “This ref was out of his depth tonight like a rabbit in the headlights i felt sorry for him.”
While a second blasted the ref for forgetting it was Tuta’s second yellow, adding: “A few minutes after booking him for the first time 🙄.”
Spurs had a tense final few minutes against Frankfurt despite being 3-1 up and having a man advantage for the final half hour.
Faride Alidou reduced the deficit with a header from a corner after Daichi Kamada’s early strike was cancelled out by a brace from Son and a penalty from Harry Kane.
In the final moments, Frankfurt pushed for an unlikely equalizer before Tottenham broke and Bryan Gil won the home side a penalty.
Kane stepped up to put the game away, but his penalty kick sailed over the crossbar.
It was ultimately insignificant, as Spurs maintained their lead in their Champions League group with two rounds remaining.
