Tottenham manager Antonio Conte makes FIFA demand over future World Cup tournaments
Antonio Conte has demanded that the winter World Cups end in Qatar in 2022.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes football should have rejected the idea years ago, but that now that the full magnitude of breaking a season for a major tournament has arrived, a lesson must be learned.
Even if the World Cup itself is a huge success.
“After this experience, even if it should be good, then we say we did it once, now let’s continue to do it like we did in the past,” Conte said. “Fingers crossed there will be no injuries and then we will see what happens.
“But what we did in the past was perfect for everybody.”
Conte has been on both sides of the fence, having played for Italy at the turn of the century and then coaching them at Euro 2016.
“I was a player at the World Cup and I played in a European Championships and to repeat again – this situation, I don’t like,” he said.
“We have seen so many problematic situations
“It is too late to complain. For sure in my opinion the whole football environment should have complained at the right time, not now.
“Maybe because the interest was so big for everybody that nobody wanted to. I didn’t complain because otherwise people say that I complain every time!
“Now it is too late and we have to live with this experience.
“There should be no doubt about this: okay, we have the World Cup now.
“But then we stop and go back to playing it in the summer.”
