Tottenham issue statement over ‘reprehensible’ Son Heung-min abuse online during West Ham match

Tottenham Hotspur have issued a statement in response to allegations of racial abuse directed at Son Heung-min online during their Premier League match against West Ham United.

Although Son initially started the match on the bench, he was later brought on in the second half and scored the second goal for Tottenham, leading them to a 2-0 victory.

Despite the team’s success, Tottenham has condemned the online abuse that Son received during the game as “completely unacceptable.”

In a statement published on Twitter, Spurs said: “We have been made aware of the utterly reprehensible online racist abuse directed at Heung-Min Son during today’s match, which has been reported by the Club. We stand with Sonny and once again call on the social media companies and authorities to take action.”

Son Heung-min has been subject to racial abuse before, with Chelsea banning one of their season ticket holders earlier this season for making such remarks towards the Tottenham forward.

Another instance of racial abuse occurred last week when Brentford forward Ivan Toney received such abuse following the Bees’ 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Brentford issued a statement expressing their “disgust and sadness” at the incident, which occurred during the Premier League’s ‘No Room for Racism’ campaign, held over the last two gameweeks.

Speaking regarding the previous abuse he received back in 2020, Son said: ”The racism we are talking about, we know I have been abused here in England, I think the best reaction is to not react at all.

“We are playing as humans and it doesn’t matter what country you come from, it doesn’t matter what human you are, we are playing football.”
