Tottenham contemplating shock move for Liverpool player who could be available on a free transfer
According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur is considering an offer to sign an out-of-favour Liverpool midfielder on a free transfer next summer.
The 27-year- old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and it seems highly unlikely that he will sign a new one, given Jurgen Klopp’s inconsistent use of him.
According to reports, negotiations for an extension are ongoing, but they are not believed to have reached an advanced stage, so Keita is free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with European clubs.
Tottenham has reportedly expressed interest in the midfielder, as Antonio Conte seeks to bolster his midfield options.
In addition to Inter, AC Milan, Lyon, Monaco, and RB Leipzig’s former club, the report states that a number of other Premier League clubs are evaluating offers.
Since joining Liverpool in 2018 from Leipzig, Keita has made 127 appearances for the Reds, scoring 11 goals and registering seven assists.
He was instrumental in their Champions League victory in 2019, their championship-winning season in 2019/20, and their FA Cup and League Cup victories last year.
This season, however, he has fallen down Klopp’s pecking order, appearing in the Premier League just six times. However, he missed several games due to a hamstring injury.
As a result, Keita’s future at Anfield is now uncertain, making a transfer to Tottenham a realistic possibility.
Spurs require a midfielder who can contribute more offensively. Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City was aided by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who typically plays a defensive role.
Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma, and Oliver Skipp are all defensive midfielders, and Tottenham has yet to replace creative players such as Giovanni Lo Celso and Tanguy Dembele.
Keita possesses the energy and ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder who contributes in both attack and defense. If the Guinean international can maintain his fitness, Conte’s system could be a good fit for him.
Additionally, the midfielder’s potential availability on a free transfer would make signing him a tremendous bargain, given that he cost Liverpool £52.75 million in 2018.
Keita could also fall further down Klopp’s pecking order if the Reds are successful in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund prodigy Jude Bellingham, who would enter the starting lineup immediately.
The transfer could also be beneficial for Keita for other reasons, as Liverpool’s current tenth-place Premier League standing makes it unlikely that they will be competing in Europe anytime soon.
Tottenham, on the other hand, is still in contention for the top four, so they have a very good chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
If that is what Keita desires, a move to North London is a distinct possibility. Unless Liverpool signs him to a new contract in the coming months.
