‘Too easy to score against them’: Tottenham told they only have one ‘top-drawer’ defender

‘Too easy to score against them’: Tottenham told they only have one ‘top-drawer’ defender

Jamie Carragher has been discussing some of Spurs’ defensive issues on The Overlap.

Tottenham have been conceding goals recently, particularly in the first half of games, and according to Carragher, the problem is not with their tactics but with their personnel.

In fact, the pundit stated that he is not convinced by Clement Lenglet or Davinson Sanchez, claiming that Cristian Romero is the only Tottenham defender he considers to be  ‘top-drawer’.

The Sky analyst mentioned Romero while analyzing the Spurs defense.

“His plan is about not being able to score against them and having quality at the other end of the pitch. It is too easy to score against them. I don’t think they have the quality of defenders. Davinson Sanchez coming in, Lenglet I’m not sure about him. Romero looks like the only one who is top-drawer. Eric Dier made a big mistake but he’s done ok under Conte,” Carragher said.

At times, Romero’s quality has been readily apparent. Especially when he’s on international duty, he’s been exceptional for his country, but for Tottenham he’s been average at best.

In some games, he appears insurmountable, whereas in others, he appears erratic and impulsive, resulting in errors and unnecessary disciplinary issues.

The reality is that a central defender is typically only as good as his teammates, and Romero is not in a position to fully shine in this Spurs squad.

Tottenham must address this issue during the January or summer transfer windows if they wish to contend for major trophies, as they are currently far too easy to score against.
