Todd Boehly set for major Chelsea clearout as 11 players set for summer transfer exit

Chelsea is planning a major departure of players from their team this summer to remove some from the previous administration.

Todd Boehly, one of the co-owners, has put in significant funds to bolster the squad over the two transfer windows he’s had since taking over the club almost a year ago.

More than half a billion pounds have been spent on bringing in several new players to the team, but this has yet to translate to success on the pitch.

Despite being given a large group of players to work with, new manager Graham Potter has struggled to achieve the desired results during his tenure.

“I’m not complaining about it. It’s exciting but a test for me and the staff,” Potter said ahead of his side’s clash against Fulham last month.

“We have a lot of good players and we have to create an environment where there is healthy competition. Only eleven can play, that is how it is, but it’s about being ready and supporting the team. There’s going to be frustration at times because only 11 can play.”

There are expectations of having a sufficient number of players in the squad, but some who are not part of the matchday squad may need to be released as part of a squad overhaul plan. The Athletic reported that several players may leave the club during the summer transfer window.

According to the report, players who have one year left on their contracts, except Thiago Silva, who recently signed a one-year extension, may be allowed to leave. This group includes Cesar Azpilicueta, Mason Mount, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

In addition to the six players with one year remaining on their contract, there are potentially five more players who could leave the club as their contracts are expiring.

Marcus Bettinelli, Ethan Ampadu, Nathan Baxter, and Tiemoue Bakayoko are among those whose futures at the club are uncertain due to a lack of news regarding a contract extension.

Meanwhile, there are ongoing discussions with N’Golo Kante about a new contract, but he could also leave on a free transfer.

It’s unclear how many other players could depart from Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window, but it’s evident that further alterations are necessary.
