Todd Boehly makes Frenkie De Jong personal call as Barcelona alleges criminal action surrounding de Jong’s contract

Chelsea’s pursuit of Frenkie De Jong is becoming almost as drawn-out as Manchester United’s previous pursuit of the midfielder.

Chelsea were initially just taking advantage of United’s failure to persuade him to join and Barcelona’s desperate need to sell. But it appears that we are now fully committed to signing him.

This afternoon’s news from Catalonia is that Todd Boehly contacted him directly to try to persuade him of Chelsea’s desire to sign him.

According to the report, De Jong is still determined to finish out his contract in Barcelona. Chelsea, however, is said to be pushing “despite the no.”

Barcelona alleges criminal action surrounding de Jong’s contract

The latest chapter in the saga of the Dutch midfielder and Barcelona takes an unexpected turn.

According to reports, the latest chapter in the Barcelona-Frenkie de Jong saga involves the threat of legal action and extortion claims.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Barcelona has informed de Jong that the terms of his current contract may involve criminality and may give rise to legal action.

The club is currently at odds with the league over its financial situation as it races to sign summer signings ahead of the start of the La Liga season this weekend—and de Jong has found himself at the center of Barcelona’s quandary.

The letter then reportedly suggests that the two parties cancel the extension and proceed under the terms of de Jong’s original contract, which he signed in 2019 after arriving in a €75 million transfer from Ajax.

According to the report, the previous board members are unconcerned about the legality of the contract extension, whereas the chairman of the Dutch players’ union suggested that de Jong could be the target of extortion.

Meanwhile, Barcelona has reportedly accepted a €65 million offer from Manchester United for the 25-year-old, clearing the way for the club’s new signings, which include Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessié, and Jules Koundé.

Prior to Sunday’s Joan Gamper Trophy friendly against Mexico’s Pumas UNAM, club president Joan Laporta assured fans that the club “will be able to register all players.”

However, de Jong has not agreed to any transfer, with reports claiming he does not want to join the side—coached by his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag—due to the club’s recent decline and lack of Champions League matches.

Both parties have stated publicly that they want de Jong to stay with Barcelona this season.
