Three stumbling blocks in Zinadine Zidane’s Manchester United managerial job as Solkjear’s replacement links intensifies
Zinedine Zidane is reportedly warming to the prospect of succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager.
Solskjaer’s job at Old Trafford appears to be hanging by a thread after a run of two wins in six Premier League games ended in another humiliating home defeat.
The 2-0 loss to Manchester City, which came just two weeks after Liverpool won 5-0 at Old Trafford, has dropped the Red Devils out of contention for the Premier League title.
After leading United to second place last season, the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo were expected to elevate them from title contenders to genuine title contenders.
However, just 11 games into the new season, Solskjaer’s side is nine points behind league leaders Chelsea, with their chances of winning the league for the first time since 2013 already looking bleak.
According to reports, while Old Trafford executives have considered sacking the under-fire Norwegian, he will remain in charge for the time being.
That hasn’t stopped speculation about who might succeed Solskjaer if he is relieved of his duties in the coming months.
According to The Sun, an intermediary has already contacted potential candidates, including Brendan Rodgers, Erik ten Hag, and Zinedine Zidane.
Because Zidane is the only one of those three managers who is not currently employed by a club, there is no need to negotiate any kind of remuneration package.
The World Cup-winning Frenchman has been out of the game since abruptly leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season.
He won two La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, and two Club World Cups during his two stints at the Bernabeu.
That track record of winning trophies appeals to United executives, who have not won a trophy since winning the Europa League in 2016.
According to Record Sport, United have made progress in their efforts to bring Zidane to Manchester, with the prospect of reuniting with former players Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo enticing.
Despite this, there are a number of stumbling blocks that United will have to overcome if they are to land the ex-Madrid manager.
It has been suggested that Zidane would prefer to wait until the summer before taking on his next project, allowing him plenty of time to implement his ideas on a new squad.
According to the record, Zidane’s limited command of the English language is another major deterrent to him accepting a job on these shores.
Another potential stumbling block, it is claimed, is that Zinedine’s wife, Veronique, is ‘not attracted’ to the idea of moving to Manchester and instead hopes her husband will take a longer break.
