Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel gave an update on his injured player who is doubtful for the second leg clash against Real Madrid.

Tuchel has detailed Antonio Rudiger’s injury and how the center-back might be able to return for Wednesday’s Champions League game.

The 28-year-old German international defender has, deservedly, been a consistent starter under the new manager and his back three systems of play.

His dynamic playstyle, which is complemented by his strength and speed, gives the likes as Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso much freedom to attack the left flank.

Chelsea coach is still certain that injured Rudiger can return for the crucial return leg against Real Madrid, albeit potentially with a protective mask.

He told Chelsea TV:

“He has a little bone injury, on the side of the face [due to] the collision at the very end of the game [v Real Madrid].

“[He] was a bit unlucky to go out with an injury after that match.

“It [was] a huge chance that would have given him a pause anyway [if he was not injured] because for him it was very, very intense in the last week.

“Hopefully, he can play on Wednesday [after] having a bit of time to breathe, recover and be back against Real Madrid.

“Maybe [he’d have] to wear a mask to protect his face.”

Chelsea will be looking to reach the Champions League finals, heading the second leg with an away goal advantage following a 1-1 first-leg draw with Los Blancos in Spain.

The point that Tuchel appears to be ready to risk playing not-fully-fit Rudiger talks volumes about the significance of the center-back for the team.

Chelsea will need to win or prevent Real Madrid from scoring to progress. A 1-1 draw will take the game to the extra time. With the new transformation witnessed under Thomas Tuchel in the Chelsea team, it will not be a shock to see them progress to the final.
