Thomas Tuchel does the unthinkable to ensure Saul Niguez can make his Chelsea debut against Aston Villa
Chelsea have arranged an in-house match at Cobham today between the first-team players not selected for international duty and the club’s Development Squad, according to football.london
Thomas Tuchel has been working with a makeshift squad this week as the majority of the German’s stars are away representing their nations across Europe and Africa.
However, Kepa Arrizabalga, Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell, Marcos Alonso, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Hakim Ziyech, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, new signing Saul Niguez, and those yet to secure a loan move away from Stamford Bridge have been training at Cobham.
Thiago Silva is also with the group as he was not cleared for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers by Chelsea.
The South American country is currently on the UK Government’s red list and Silva would’ve faced a forced ten-day hotel quarantine had he traveled.

Hudson-Odoi, meanwhile, has only featured in the UEFA Super Cup. Chilwell and Loftus-Cheek haven’t been handed any competitive action, although the latter was forced into self-isolation for ten days after testing positive for Covid-19.
Today’s in-house match will be an occasion to get vital minutes into the legs of those yet to feature massively for the Blues this term.
However, Tuchel maintained after the draw at Anfield that Silva and Chilwell were fully done to speed having returned late for pre-season training.
This preparation comes at a time Chelsea are anticipating introducing Saul Niguez into their playing squad as soon as possible, and will definitely act as good preparation for Atletico loanee star.
The 26-year-old will bring poise and composure to the central areas in the same manner as Jorginho, albeit with a somewhat more attacking focus.
He also brings a range of passing that none of his three midfield team-mates can claim to have in their repertoire: Jorginho is skilled at short-range, Mateo Kovacic goes for riskier passes and N’Golo Kante is a superb ball carrier.
Even if there are only two slots in the four-man midfield to fill, the arrival of the Spaniard also gives Tuchel the chance to experiment in using different systems against weaker opposition with his Chelsea debut set to come up against Aston Villa
