‘They’re in a different world’: Merson advises Arsenal to stop doing what Liverpool do every week
Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to stop relying on their wingers for goals, as Liverpool does on a weekly basis.
Last weekend, Arsenal scored three fantastic goals against Watford. Two of them were scored by their wingers, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, while the other was scored by Martin Odegaard, who mostly operates on the right side of the offensive third.
Many people are concerned about Arsenal’s lack of goals from striker Alexandre Lacazette.
Merson is concerned about this and believes that only Liverpool can rely on their two wingers for goals because they live in a ‘different world’ than the rest of the Premier League.
Speaking about Arsenal’s lack of goals from their striker, Merson wrote in his column on The Daily Star:
“My worry is they scored three goals the other day (vs Watford) and Alexandre Lacazette doesn’t get one.
“He’s your centre forward!
“That worries me. If Lacazette gets a couple I’d be going mad now saying they are dead certs for the top four.
“But, you can’t keep on relying on wingers. I know Liverpool do, but they’re in a different world their two wingers (Mohamed Salah on the right and Sadio Mane/Diogo Jota on the left).”
Lacazette has been Arsenal’s main man up front this season, but he has only scored three Premier League goals.
This has put pressure on Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe, and Martin Odegaard, among others, to step up.
Fortunately for Arsenal, they all have, which is why they have a good chance of finishing in the top four.
Merson, on the other hand, has a valid point.
Arsenal’s system is similar to Liverpool’s in that the center-forward drops deep to link play up.
However, they cannot rely on their wingers to score all of their goals because no one at the Emirates can match Mo Salah’s totals.
Mikel Arteta must now find a way to finish in the top four. If that means relying on his wingers, so be it, but the Gunners must sign a top-tier center-forward during the summer transfer window.
