Tottenham’s hunt for silverware suffered another blow with the club’s wait for silverware stretching further into the 14th year after their Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

Tottenham coach Ryan Mason acknowledged his team is “four or five years” behind Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions-elect – and it certainly displayed at Wembley.

This defeat doesn’t just have implications for the north Londoners in the short term as they bid to keep Harry Kane, pull in a new manager, and eventually kick on after a period of great stagnation.

The most successful clubs in English history (honours won)

10. Nottingham Forest (13)

9. Newcastle United (14)

8. Everton (24)

7. Aston Villa (25)

6. Tottenham Hotspur (26)

1. Manchester United (66)

Spurs also moved down a peg in the all-time ranks for English football’s most successful clubs, with City outdoing them into fifth.

Since the 2008 takeover, Manchester City have now won 12 major honors – and could add two more next month if they win the Premier League and Champions League.

With so much glory squeezed into a short space of time, they are yet to catch up with four clubs whose success has enjoyed greater longevity.

It really is neck-and-neck at the top battle featuring Manchester United and Liverpool. Last season, it looked as if Liverpool manager Klopp was on the verge of building a dynasty that would last for some time, but the Reds will end this season without any silverware.
The Red Devils could extend their lead further if they win the Europa League.
