“The most disappointing signing…” – Journalist delivers huge Tottenham verdict on summer addition
Djed Spence was Tottenham’s “most disappointing” acquisition during the summer period, according to source Dean Jones.
The youthful right wing-back finally moved from Middlesbrough in July after months of rumors, but he has only played in one game since the £20 million transfer.
When the 21-year-old moved to north London, especially given Spurs’ issues on the right, there were enormous expectations because he had been a major factor in Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League while on loan the previous season.
However, Spence only played once in the first month of the season, and that was as a late substitution on his return to the City Ground, with Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal clearly ahead of him in the lineup.
Spence will be expecting his chances improve in the upcoming weeks since games will be played often due to the return of the Champions League, but Jones has been frustrated with how his Tottenham career has started.
What Jones has said about Spence
He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’d say the most disappointing signing might be Spence because I just don’t see him figuring.
“There was a pretty big build up to his arrival, but he has only played one minute so far, and Spurs even looked into signing an additional player in his position as the clock ticked down.”
Spence chance
Spence currently appears to be behind Royal and Doherty in the list of right wing-backs.
The former has started every Premier League game, and despite doing an excellent job, Conte is probably going to rotate his team with so many games coming up quickly.
With the exception of the international break, which Spence will undoubtedly be focusing on, Spurs have a game every three days up until the World Cup, beginning with the Champions League start against Marseille on Wednesday.
Conte rotated his wing-backs frequently last season, so Spence might use the busy schedule of games as a chance to show off his skills, albeit playing against two other wing-backs does make things a little more challenging.
