‘The gap is too big’ – Guardiola discloses why 19 y/o Man City star was sent out on loan

Liam Delap was loaned out to Stoke City for a season this summer after failing to persuade Pep Guardiola that he was worth keeping in the senior squad, and it is unclear whether he will have a long-term future at the Etihad Stadium.

The 19-year-old impressed at youth level and scored for the first team, but Guardiola’s decision to sign Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland in consecutive transfer windows appears to have snuffed out his chances.

Delap’s stock is clearly low right now, as he has been loaned out to a club that finished 14th in the Championship last season.

Guardiola was candid about Delap’s development, admitting that the England youth international is a long way from making the first team, so he hasn’t progressed.

He told the Manchester Evening News: “Some players on loan, like Liam Delap, it’s important for them to play regularly.

“Because of the competition in their position, maybe it’s better as a club, for the players, to realise if they are able to play (elsewhere) because the gap between the academy and first team is so big.”

Delap had 11 goals and seven assists in 17 games for the U18s and 35 goals and nine assists in 36 games for the U21s, but his form in the academy had led to only six appearances in the previous two seasons.

So it’s no surprise that Guardiola loaned him out, as Alvarez and Haaland are both proven strikers.

Delap is getting his chance in the first team, but he has to play a lot lower than the City duo.
