‘That’s why I have to leave’: Furious Arsenal star posts goodbye message to loan club on Instagram
Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is unhappy after Fiorentina decided not to exercise their option to sign him on a permanent basis this summer.
The Uruguayan was a standout in his first season at the Emirates, but things changed drastically in his second year.
For whatever reason, Unai Emery decided to cast him in a more advanced role, which harmed his confidence.
Torreira was subsequently loaned to Atletico Madrid for a season in the summer of 2020, and then to Fiorentina the following year.
Last season, he rose to prominence in Italy, and everyone anticipated La Viola to exercise the £12.8 million option to buy clause in his contract.
Fiorentina, on the other hand, wanted to reduce the fee to as little as £6 million, which irritated Arsenal.
The Gunners apparently did not respond to that bid, and Torreira appears to be dissatisfied with the Italian club’s decision-makers as well.
Torreira said in his farewell address to Fiorentina fans that he tried his hardest to stay at the club, but that some people ‘behaved in a bad way,’ preventing a permanent move.
He wrote in a post on Instagram: “Dear “Tifosi” from ACF Fiorentina. Unfortunately, the time has come to say goodbye. It is with great sadness that my relationship with ACF Fiorentina ends. Club that gave me so much love and support all this time.
“From the beginning they made me feel at home. I discovered a wonderful city that was always kind to me, both on and off the pitch. They always showed me affection, respect and for that, I will always be grateful. Thanks to his trust I was able to find the continuity and level I wanted. I owe that to my teammates and all the fans who gave us energy game by game.
“Know that I always left everything on the field of play for these colours. Special thanks to all the club staff; cooks, props, manager, physiotherapist and security. They are the fundamental piece for the functioning of this institution.
“Know that I did my best to continue being part of this club, but unfortunately there were those who, acting in a bad way, according to my understanding, managed to prevent this from happening and that is why I have to leave. I wish you the best for the future. They will have one more fan cheering from wherever I have to be.”
Almost everyone who saw Torreira last season assumed this was a formality. He was one of Fiorentina’s top players, and buying him for £12.8 million would have been a steal in our opinion.
However, following Torreira’s Instagram farewell, it appears that this transfer will not take place this summer.
The Uruguayan has one year left on his Arsenal deal and it is quite improbable that he will be retained.
He’ll have to find a new club now, but the main question is whether overseas clubs would be willing to fulfil Edu’s asking price.
Torreira is a gifted player, and it will be intriguing to see where he ends up if he leaves Arsenal this summer.
