Super-agent reveals ‘fearless’ star who rejected Newcastle in January, now could join Arsenal for £50m

Italian super-agent Roberto De Fanti claimed in his  CaughtOffside column that rumored Arsenal target Gianluca Scamacca turned down a January move to Newcastle United.

This summer, the brilliant Italian striker is attracting a lot of attention. Arsenal failed with a £34 million deal just a few days ago, but additional rumours have since claimed that the Gunners are not giving up their chase.

Scamacca is a superb striker with full Italy international experience. The 23-year-old, dubbed “fearless,” had a terrific season in Serie A, scoring 16 goals for a team that ended 11th.

If everything goes as planned for Arsenal in the coming weeks, Scamacca might make the move to the Emirates, but things could have been quite different now – he could easily be a Newcastle United player.

De Fanti revealed in his column: “It is rumoured throughout the industry that Arsenal made a £25m (€30m) offer to Sassuolo for Scamacca in the last couple of days.

“The club’s general manager also said that it is very likely the striker will leave to play in the Premier League.

“Sassuolo has rejected Arsenal’s opening offer though. The fee needed, I believe, will be about £50m. Sassuolo has already pushed back offers from clubs in the Premier League – Arsenal, of course, and Newcastle United.

“The Magpies wanted him back in January – it was a really, really good offer, but the player, understandably, did not want to risk joining a club who were facing the possibility of being relegated.”

Newcastle had to put in a lot of effort in January. At the time, the threat of relegation was quite real, and many players were hesitant to take such a significant risk.

Eddie Howe persuaded Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, and Matt Targett of his project and immediate plans, and each of those players contributed to the Magpies’ success.

The Magpies will need to strengthen more this summer, and it would not be surprising to see them rekindle their interest in Scamacca, a truly brilliant young striker.

However, with Arsenal also in the race and having reportedly tabled a proposal, Mikel Arteta’s side may be in the driving seat for his signature.
