Steven Gerrard predicts Liverpool’s chances for season after difficult start

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool will have a good finish to the 2022/23 campaign and expects Jurgen Klopp’s squad to hit the ground running following the World Cup break.

The Reds have had a difficult start to the season, winning just six of their first 14 Premier League matches. They now rank sixth in the standings. Despite coming second in their group, Klopp’s team advanced to the final 16 of the Champions League, setting up a mouthwatering matchup with Real Madrid.

The Reds have advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and will face Manchester City in their first game back following a six-week break due to the Qatar World Cup. On Boxing Day, Liverpool will face Gerrard’s former club Aston Villa in the Premier League before returning home to face Leicester City on December 30.

Liverpool will be eager to improve upon their early-season performance, and former Reds captain Steven Gerrard is confident that his former team will be back to their best when they return to action; he believes they can utilize this break as a second preseason. The 42-year-old former Villa manager, who was fired in October, told “Yeah, it is [like a second pre-season]. It’s an opportunity to get a lot of work in on the training ground [and] reset a few things.

“I’m sure Jürgen and his staff are doing a lot of things tactically but [it’s] also an opportunity to have a much-needed rest. They’ve played a lot of football over the last few years, they were involved in every competition last year.

“So to have a small pre-season before a ball was kicked [and then] to have this opportunity to rest and then have a second build-up, I’m hoping that Liverpool come flying out of the blocks.

“I expect a really strong six months and finish to the season because important players have had the chance to rest and recover and the players [who have been] in the World Cup should come back full of confidence, in a good place, physically ready. I expect a really strong, exciting finish to the season for the Reds.”

Liverpool spent a portion of their midseason break in Dubai in preparation for next week’s match against City.

The Reds played their first preseason match against Lyon on Sunday. Although the Reds were defeated 3-1 by Alexandre Lacazette’s brace and Bradley Barcola’s second-half goal, it was an opportunity for Klopp’s squad to get a much-needed workout.

After spending the better part of a week in the Middle East, Liverpool will face AC Milan on Friday afternoon in another friendly with Darwin Nunez available. Meanwhile, following the World Cup break, Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Djik, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Alisson have not yet returned. Against Lyon, Mohamed Salah, Thiago, and Joel Matip were among those that participated.
