Spurs dealt huge transfer blow over £50m “special talent”, it’s a gutting disappointment for Conte

Tottenham  have suffered a setback in their pursuit of James Maddison…

The Leicester City midfielder is thought to be a target for manager Antonio Conte.

Last month, transfer insider Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT that the Spurs had “touched base over Maddison,” while CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs told the same outlet that “Conte likes the player a lot.”

There were even rumours that the Foxes playmaker wanted to join Tottenham after a bid from Newcastle United was rejected, but both the Magpies and Spurs have suffered a devastating transfer setback.

Despite being the only club without a new signing this summer, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers told reporters that England international was “not for sale.”

“We need to move players out but it’s not getting rid of everyone and certainly not our best assets. It’s something the club are very strong on,” he added.

It’s no secret that Tottenham are looking for a creative midfielder, and Maddison fit the bill perfectly.

According to Transfermarkt, the English maestro was in fine form last season, providing the Midlands outfit with 18 goals and 12 assists from 53 matches across all competitions.

Maddison, described by The Athletic’s Rob Tanner as “one of the Premier League’s chief creators,” could have been the final piece of the puzzle for Conte at Hotspur Way.

Tanguy Ndombele (91 games, 10 goals, 9 assists) and Giovani Lo Celso (84 games, 8 goals, 6 assists) have failed to fill the void left by Christian Erisken.

Maddison has far outperformed the disastrous Spurs duo in just one season, whereas they have struggled to deliver over a three-year period.

According to The Times’ Henry Winter, the “special talent” was thought to be available for around £50m, so Conte will be devastated by this major transfer blow.

With less than a month until the deadline, his focus will need to shift to another target.
