Spurs could field youngsters against AC Milan after Bentacur latest blow

Rodrigo Bentancur has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, so Pape Matar Sarr and Oliver Skipp will start in midfield for Tottenham when they resume their Champions League campaign in Milan tonight.

Bentancur, who ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Saturday’s 4-1 loss at Leicester, has added to Spurs’ injury woes.

With Yves Bissouma already out with an ankle injury and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg serving a one-match suspension, Antonio Conte will pair Sarr and Skipp at center back instead of pushing Eric Dier forward.

“We have the solution in our house with the two young players,” said Conte.

“They are [in their] first game in the Champions League. They are really young, 20 and 22 years old, but we have to be good to help them overcome the emotion. We must trust them.”

Yesterday, Tottenham released a statement detailing the extent of Uruguayan international Bentancur’s injury. The text stated, “The midfielder will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”

Hugo Lloris, Spurs’ goalkeeper, has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a knee injury, and Antonio Conte has only recently returned from gallbladder surgery in Italy.

He said: “I’m still not 100% but it’s important to be with the players.”
