‘Special’: Man City star lauds £35m Pep signing who ‘changed the way’ football is played
Gavin Bazunu, a Manchester City youngster, has praised fellow goalkeeper Ederson Moraes for the impact the Brazilian has had on the role.
The Republic of Ireland international praised the City number one for evolving the goalkeeping role into what it is now in an interview with the Independent. Ederson was the first true example of a shot-stopper who can also play with his feet.
Since Ederson’s £35 million move to Manchester United in 2017, the Premier League has seen a surge in keepers who are skilled with both their hands and their feet. Jordan Pickford, Alisson Becker, and Hugo Lloris are all comparable to the City playmaker.
Indeed, Pep Guardiola’s arrival has had a significant impact on how goalkeepers play not only in England, but throughout Europe. And for Bazunu, he has drawn inspiration from Ederson’s impact on the game since his arrival in England.
The on-loan Portsmouth goalkeeper said: “He’s a special goalkeeper. He’s changed the way the game is being playe. And I definitely take a lot of learning from the way he plays.
“Obviously I want to have my own build. But the way he has changed modern goalkeeping, there’s a lot of things, a lot of positives I can take from his game and try to add that to mine.”
To say the least, Ederson’s influence on how goalkeepers should play has been significant. Since Manuel Neuer established himself as a shot-stopper with excellent ball control, the concept has taken some time to gain traction.
With the Brazilian keeper, however, many more players in the position are now focusing on how they can control and move the ball rather than how they can prevent it from hitting the back of the net.
