“Something wrong at the moment.” Former Gunners star provides insight on Chelsea ‘curse’
Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit told Sporting Post (via Metro) that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would regret leaving the Gunners and mentioned the Chelsea striker curse.
The Gabon international moved to Chelsea from Barcelona on the final day of the previous summer transfer window.
What he has demonstrated thus far pales in comparison to what he accomplished in Spain for half a season and his contributions at Arsenal.
The 33-year-old has scored three goals in 17 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions. Many of his appearances have been as a substitute or as a starter who was removed early.
Here’s what Petit said about why Aubameyang would now be regretting not playing for Arsenal (h/t Metro):
“I think he lost his passion and I think after his spell at Barcelona he can see what Arsenal are doing without him. What Jesus and Nketiah are doing.
“Maybe he is thinking if he had the right attitude he could be part of what is going on there.”
It is common knowledge that the 33-year-old did not have a good relationship with Gunners manager Mikel Arteta during the latter part of his tenure with the club. Consequently, it made sense to part ways, regardless of the future of Arsenal.
Petit continued by mentioning the striker curse at Chelsea, which has proven to be a significant issue (h/t Metro):
“Now with Chelsea, maybe there is a “curse” with the striker, but Didier Drogba wasn’t cursed – the whole team is not working, there is something wrong at the moment.”
Only Didier Drogba and Diego Costa have scored 20+ league goals per season on multiple occasions for Chelsea over the past 15 to 20 years. The Blues have signed numerous other elite number nines during this time, but none of them have flourished in this position.
These players, including Fernando Torres, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata, and Romelu Lukaku, have excellent goal-scoring records elsewhere, but not in Chelsea uniforms.
Add Aubameyang to that list, as he is currently experiencing significant difficulty. Granted, the team is not blossoming either, but the 33-year-old has appeared out of place since his first appearance. It would be preferable if we separated in the summer.
