Six records Lionel Messi is set to break in FIFA Argentina vs France World Cup Final

Messi, the captain of Argentina, has been in top form during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has been instrumental in his team’s run to the final.

Argentina, captained by Lionel Messi, will face reigning champions France in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final on Sunday.

The famous forward has already confirmed his retirement from international competition following the championship match. Messi hopes to capture the first World Cup trophy of his brilliant career as Argentina competes in the sixth World Cup final in tournament history.

In the meantime, France is aiming to join Brazil and Italy as the only countries to win consecutive World Cups.

Messi, the captain of Argentina, has been in top form throughout this tournament and was instrumental in his team’s run to the final. When Argentina took on Australia in the round of 16, the 35-year-old played his 1,000th career match. Currently, he and Kylian Mbappe of France are tied for the most goals scored in the tournament.

On Sunday’s championship match, Messi will attempt to break some incredible records, and we have listed them below.

Most wins by a player in World Cup

Messi has won 16 matches in FIFA World Cup competitions in which he has participated. If Argentina wins the final, the great striker will win his 17th World Cup match, tying Messi for the most victories in World Cup history. Miroslav Klose of Germany now holds the record for most World Cup victories with 17.

Most appearances by a player in World Cup

If Messi plays in the final on Sunday, he would surpass Germany’s Lothar Matthaus as the player with the most World Cup appearances (25 appearances).

Most minutes played in World Cup

Paolo Maldini, an Italian icon, has played the most minutes in World Cup history: 2,220. Messi has played for 2,194 minutes and is poised to break the record in the championship match. There is only a 23-minute difference between the two.

Most assists in World cup

Messi has assisted on nine goals throughout FIFA World Cup matches to date. With ten assists, Pele, a superstar from Brazil, is currently in first place. Messi will earn the record if he assists his teammates in scoring at least two goals in the championship game.

Multiple Golden Ball awards

The striker from Argentina was awarded the Golden Ball in the 2014 World Cup. The Golden Ball is awarded to the World Cup edition’s finest all-around player. Messi is once again among the favorites to receive the award. If he succeeds, he will be the first player to win two ‘Golden Ball’ awards.

Winner of both Golden Boot and Golden Ball in World Cup

In addition to the Golden Ball, the World Cup goal-scorer with the most goals in a given tournament receives the Golden Boot. Only seven players, including Leônidas da Silva (1938), Garrincha (1962), Ronaldo (1998 Golden Ball, 2002 Golden Boot), Paolo Rossi (1982), Salvatore Schillaci (1990), and former Argentina ace Mario Kempes (1978), have received both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot.

As Messi and Mbappe are tied for the most goals scored in this edition with five, the former might overcome the latter and win the Golden Boot as well.

 Most goal contributions

Messi has contributed 20 goals, including 11 goals and 9 assists, in FIFA World Cup competitions. Pele owns the record with 22 goal contributions, comprising 12 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. Consequently, Messi will have a fantastic opportunity to exceed or equal Pele’s total.
