“Shocked” – Journalist shares what “anyone” you talk to “around football” says about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
According to journalist Dean Jones, people in football are stunned that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept his job at Manchester United.
The Norwegian coach is approaching three years in charge at Old Trafford, including his initial interim period, but his position is under scrutiny right now following some poor results in recent weeks.
United made a strong start to the season after bringing in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo over the summer, winning four of their first five league games.
However, things have quickly turned sour in the last few months. The Red Devils have now lost four of their last six Premier League games, with their most recent two defeats being 5-0 and 2-0 thrashings at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively.
These results have dropped United outside of the top four, with little chance of ending their wait for their first league title since 2013.
Solskjaer signed a new contract with the club in July that will keep him there until at least 2024. After the derby defeat to City, it was also revealed that United’s board has no plans to fire him.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT that people in the game can’t believe the 48-year-old has held on to his job for this long.
He said: “The support he’s had, anyone you talk to around United, just around football, to be honest, is just shocked that they’ve allowed it to go this far.”
Right now, it appears that Solskjaer’s future is being discussed game by game. United return to action this weekend when they travel to Watford. The Hornets appear to be in a relegation battle this season, so a loss at Vicarage Road could spell the end for Solskjaer.
Still, the 13-time Premier League champions will enter that game as clear favorites, and if they win, their next three games could be pivotal in determining whether Solskjaer keeps his job.
The team takes on Villarreal in the Champions League, where their place in the knockout stages is far from guaranteed, before facing Chelsea and Arsenal in back-to-back league games.
If these results go against United, the club’s hierarchy may be forced to act and discharge Solskjaer from his position.
