Shakhtar Donetsk chief drops fresh Arsenal transfer hint amid Mykhaylo Mudryk January ‘offer’

Carlo Nicolini, the head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk, has strongly hinted that teenager Mykhaylo Mudryk could join Arsenal in January. The Gunners missed out on a deal for the Ukrainian international during the summer, but they may try again during the next transfer window.

As the team presently sits atop the Premier League standings at the midseason break owing to the World Cup, Mikel Arteta could use the winter to bolster his squad for an unexpected title challenge.

While they have performed admirably up to this point and maintain a five-point lead, the manager has at times lamented his lack of squad depth.

“That’s the squad that we have and we have to try to utilise the squad in the best possible way,” Arteta said after defeat to Brighton in the EFL Cup. “We know where we are and we knew the moment we had certain injuries that the squad is already very, very short.”

The midfield and wide positions require greater depth than other positions on the transfer market in January. Mudryk is one of the numerous players that continue to be associated with a transition to alleviate these issues.

Since being linked to Shakhtar, the youngster’s performance in the Champions League has attracted numerous suitors. However, it looks that his heart is set on a move to the Emirates Stadium, as he has dropped multiple hints in interviews about a move to north London.

Now, club president Nicolini has addressed a January transfer, stating to  TuttoJuve: “Now it will be time to get back in contact with the club, the agent and Mychajlo to see if anyone will start a negotiation. He’s a great professional, he’ll leave these voices to his agents. We’ll see if anything happens or not”.

While he has not specified which club they will approach, interviewer Mirko Di Natale verified through Twitter that it is Arsenal and that they have made a “substantial offer.”
