Scott McTominay breaks 23-year record set by old Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

McTominay set a new 23-year record after coming off the bench to help Manchester United beat Omonia Nicosia on Thursday.

Omonia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho produced a stunning performance at Old Trafford, setting the Red Devils up for a night of Europa League frustration.

He made 11 saves to deny Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford as the Cypriot minnows looked set to earn a point against Erik ten Hag’s first-choice stars.

However, he was finally defeated in the dying seconds as United’s sub McTominay secured a 1-0 win in the Europa League.

That not only earned the 25-year-old Scotland international a goal bonus, but also a small piece of history.

The midfielder became the first United substitute since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s famous Champions League strike at the Nou Camp in 1999 to score an extra-time winner in a European competition.

The late goal by the Norwegian completed a dramatic comeback against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

It also ensured Sir Alex Ferguson’s star-studded team won an unprecedented treble.

And now, 23 years later, it was McTominay’s turn to be the dramatic late hero – albeit with far less on the line.

However, the result keeps United on track to reach the knockout stages.

They are three points behind Group E leaders Real Sociedad, who defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0.

Now the focus returns to the Premier League, where Ten Hag’s men have had an up-and-down season so far.

And, after seeing his team waste over 30 chances against Omonia on Thursday, he knows his men must be sharper if they are to get past the top-joint-best flight’s defense when they face Newcastle this Sunday.
