SAD! Man United’s Jadon Sancho training as a defender to dodge into Ole Gunnar starting lineup

Manchester United have been training with Jadon Sancho as a right wing-back in order to find a way to include their £73 million signing in the starting lineup.

Even before manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer switched to a 3-5-2 formation with no wingers, Sancho was struggling for minutes.

He was an unused substitute in Solskjaer’s first game with the tactic, a 3-0 win over Tottenham, before playing three minutes against Atalanta and a frustrating 45 minutes against Manchester City.

Sancho’s qualities are obviously not suited to the current system, so coaches have been deploying the Englishman as a wing-back in recent training sessions, according to The Athletic.

Yes, United spent over a year pursuing a player, eventually paying £73 million to sign him, only to bench him and try to play him as a defender. This isn’t something you could make up.

Sancho could be used there against teams that will sit deep and defend for their lives, with usual right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka being a little too defensively minded for those types of games.

According to The Athletic, Sancho is still confident in his ability to succeed at United, and no one at Old Trafford doubts him.

He admits to being taken aback by the speed of the English game, but he is working hard, and coaches have been impressed with his determination and eagerness to learn.

Sancho has made an impression with his willingness to beat a defender and reluctance to give up even when things aren’t going his way, and it’s because of this that this occasional position shift has been discussed.
